Asthma is a hypersensitive, inflammatory respiratory disorder of the airways characterised by bronchospasm, inflammation of the bronchial wall and excessive production of thick mucous. Extrinsic asthma is immune mediated whereas intrinsic asthma is related to environmental factors - both trigger inflammatory mediators.

Ear Infections (Otitis Media) commonly occur following an upper respiratory tract infection in infants and young children until around 3 years of age. Infection is usually due to a bacterial or viral infection resulting in inflammation and pressure / fluid build-up of the middle ear. An ear infection can be either acute or chronic. Young children are more susceptible to ear infections as their immune system is not fully developed.
